EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE: GREETINGS & SAL-UTATIONS!

FEDERAL TAX REFORM…GOOD OR BAD?
REMINDER: MINIMUM WAGE GOING UP JANUARY 1
NEW UST REGS COMING SOON
OPERATOR TRAINING CLASS UPDATE

In addition to wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, I wanted to use this message to bring you a summary of the final version of the Federal Tax Reform bill which has now passed both the House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, and which was signed into law by the President last week.

As you know, this whole process has been very confusing from beginning to end. There have been multiple different versions of the legislation kicking around, and the whole debate was ridden with rumors, speculation, and disinformation.

The other problem we had in covering it comes from the fact that we are here in high-tax, high-cost New Jersey. If we lived in any one of about 45 other states, I could sit back and say with confidence that yes, you personally and your business are going to be better off under these cuts. However, losing the ability to deduct property taxes and income taxes (beyond $10,000) is a big blow. Although this deduction is not being capped in isolation, it is part of the broader reform. The question is, once you factor in the reductions in the tax rates, and the big increase in the standard deductions, are you better or worse off?

I can’t answer this question for you, and it’s possible only your accountant can. Generally speaking, if you currently take the standard deduction it’s pretty safe to say that you will definitely be better off under these reforms. If you itemize, then it could go either way….. it all depends on what your property and income taxes are.

Also this is a reminder that minimum wage is increased to $8.60 per hour as of January 1, 2018. Remember to inform your payroll service if you have employees that are paid minimum wage.

In the upcoming weeks I will be able to update you on the new UST regulations that we have been anticipating for the past few years.  I expect we will know the final version by the end of January.

Finally, we have mentioned previously that all sites with USTs will be required to have Class A, B, and C operators certified by October 2018.  Many of you have already taken the class offered only at Rutgers. More classes are being scheduled at the Rutgers Bordentown, New Brunswick, and Morris Township locations.  Here is a helpful link:  http://www.cpe.rutgers.edu/brochures/intros/ust-AB.html

The upcoming classes are:

I wish you all a very Happy New Year and prayers for good health and prosperity.  Please see the below flyer for AutoPart International's Exclusive Specials for NJGCA Members for the month of January!

NEWS AROUND THE STATE: THE NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW

12/28/2017:
In 4 days, N.J.'s minimum wage will creep up 16˘

A new year on Monday will bring a slight increase in New Jersey's minimum wage. The rate will climb 16˘ to $8.60 an hour. That hike will bump up annual wages for the state's estimated 300,000 minimum wage workers by about $469 apiece, according to New Jersey Policy Perspective, a liberal policy group. A full-time minimum wage earner makes less than $18,000 a year, less than half of the estimated $37,974 a single person needs to be paid to cover basic expenses in NJ.  Annual increases are determined by the consumer price index after the state's voter's approved a constitutional amendment in 2013.  The minimum wage rose from $8.25 in 2015, to $8.38 in 2016, to $8.44 in 2017.  Last year, Democrats who control the Legislature pushed through a $15/hour bill that was ultimately vetoed by Gov. Christie.  Gov.-elect Phil Murphy has said he is in favor of gradually hiking the minimum wage until it reaches $15.00.  NJ is one of 18 states where the minimum wage will increase on Jan. 1st.  In most of NY, the minimum will increase to $10.40 an hour from $9.70.  NYC’s minimum wage increases to $13 an hour for businesses with at least 11 employees. Pennsylvania's minimum wage remains $7.25 an hour -- the same as the federal amount.

CSNews Summit Analyzes How Future Cars Will Impact Future Fuels
Changes in automotive technology will have a profound impact on fuel retailing in the next 5-10 years. Specifically, the increased adoption of alternative fuels, digitization of the driving experience, and changing consumer behavior will usher in a transportation industry that is very different to what we have here in America today, according to Prasat Satyavolu, chief digital officer for Cognizant, an international leader in providing information technology, digital technology and consulting services. Satyavolu was the keynote speaker at Convenience Store News' fourth-annual Alternative Fuels Summit, sponsored by biofuel trade association Growth Energy. Among Satyvolu's predictions to watch for are:
  • Emergence of automated and assisted driving, and eventually self-driving vehicles;
  • Vehicle sharing replacing individual car ownership;
  • Energy use moving more strongly to clean fuels; and
  • Need-based transportation growing.

Because charging electric vehicles still takes too long for most drivers (an average of 30 minutes), Satyvolu believes a move toward hybrid vehicles is imminent.  "We're going to see a slow but steady adoption of alternative fuel vehicles," he said. "But there will be no one source of energy. It will be a blend of different types of fuel." He also discussed how the "notion of car ownership is undergoing a major shift," noting that projections show an increased penetration of car-sharing services in the near future.

MEMBER BENEFIT PARTNER MESSAGE BOARD:

TMP Energy Solutions

Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bills

We have had a number of NJGCA members successfully reduce their rate per kWh signing up through our energy saving program. We know it's difficult to collect 12 months worth of previous electric bills to get an "accurate" analysis when comparing a variable rate to a fixed rate, but we now have another option available.

This new solution is a power purchase option; the other program is still in full force and has saved members thousands of dollars. If you sign up for the power purchase option, you will be grouped with other NJGCA members until the minimum kW demand is acquired. By pooling the member's usage together, you will be able to take advantage, as large energy users do, and receive a lower kWh rate.

Each member will receive their own contract. Each member is responsible to sign and return the agreement the day it is received in order to secure the price for their group.

Please do your due diligence, so when you receive the proposal and the agreement you will be able to make an intelligent decision.

If by chance, you still want us to assess you bills, to give you a price to compare, we will require 12 months of your most recent utility bills.

There are no bills required, but we would still like to have one bill per meter on file to check account #'s, meter #'s  service addresses and other pertinent information incase there is a problem.

The term of the agreement is for 12 months. During this term period, you will have price protection against any energy price increases along with a low fixed kWh rate.

If you are interested in becoming part of this power purchase option, please contact Greg Cannon at the NJGCA.

Remember when you sign up your energy through the NJGCA Energy Program, TMP makes a considerable donation to the NJGCA Scholarship Fund through their proceeds. This has no affect on your rate, and costs you nothing out of pocket.

We hope to help hundreds of NJGCA members reduce their utility costs by participating in this and our other cost reduction programs.  Our purpose, in the endeavor, is to help NJGCA members lower their energy costs while supporting the NJGCA Scholarship Fund.

Contact GREG CANNON at 732-256-9646 or email Greg at greg@njgca.org. Mention that you are interested in saving money on your energy bills. NJGCA & TMP Energy Solutions will handle all the rest.

POLITICAL PARTICIPATON: THE NJGCA PAC

DEFENDING OUR MEMBERS.
PROTECTING YOUR INTERESTS.
ANSWER THE CALL & CONTRIBUTE TODAY!!

Promoting our agenda in Trenton is of utmost importance to NJGCA and our members.

However, in order to truly affect the debate, we must ensure our friends in the Legislature are re-elected. It is for this reason that your Association has established the NJGCA PAC.

For too long, the weight of funding our Political Action Committee, the arm of the Association responsible for political donations, has rested upon a few. This is not only unfair to those few members who have shouldered this burden, but means we are not utilizing our full strength to affect the debate in Trenton.

To truly understand the importance of supporting our allies, consider our successes in Trenton:

We defeated BELOW COST SELLING
We made history in getting FIRST RIGHT OF REFUSAL signed into law!
We have built large support for RIGHT TO REPAIR and got it passed out of the Assembly
We defended your small business against the false accusations of Attorney General Anne Milgram
We gained wide support to move New Jersey to an all PIF Inspection System and close the CIF lanes
...and MUCH MORE!!

In each instance, we achieved these goals with the help of our friends in the Legislature!

If every member contributes just $100.00 we will be able to provide the help necessary to ensure victory for our allies.

PLEASE SEND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO:
NJGCA PAC
4900 Route 33 West, Suite 100
Wall Township, NJ 07753
Please make your donation payable to NJGCA PAC

I understand that times are tough for all NJGCA members, but this is just as important as any battle we have fought in the past.

We have made great progress in Trenton. I hope that you will answer the call.

Energy Information Agency Weekly Retail Gasoline Prices

Each week, the Energy Information Administration publishes a list of average gasoline prices for the previous three weeks. NJGCA will begin including this list with the Weekly Road Warrior.  Remember, these prices are reflective of self-serve everywhere except NJ.
