EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE: GREETINGS & SAL-UTATIONS!

GOVERNOR-ELECT MURPHY PROPOSES $15/HOUR MINIMUM WAGE
REPRESENTATIVES IN WASHINGTON DC DEBATE TAX REFORM
HAPPY THANKSGIVING GREETING

The minimum wage war is on!  We have been warning that this was going to happen for some time now, but Governor-elect Murphy didn't even wait until he was inaugurated to hold a press conference outlining his expectation that a minimum wage increase will be accomplished very quickly in his new administration.  I responded immediately and sent a press release before the Governor-elect’s press conference was even finished.  I also conducted TV and radio interviews, which you can access here. NJ 101.5 Bill Spadea Radio Interview. Channel 7 Eyewitness News TV interview.

I will be gathering with the leaders of other small business trade associations next week and we will be planning our strategy to fight this.  I am asking members to please pay attention and be engaged!!  This is not going to be an easy fight but it's a fight we must undertake!!

On the battlefront in Washington DC, you can't help but hear about the tax reform debate. The House of Representatives, the Senate and the President all have different ideas about how the tax code could be changed to be fairer. I've refrained from discussing any of the details because they’re constantly changing, there’s incredible disagreement on all sides, and quite frankly I am not sure that I understand it well enough to explain it because it is anything but simple.  Eric Blomgren in our office has compiled a summary of where tax reform efforts currently stand. You can read the synopsis by clicking HERE.

I’d like to be able to tell you that yes, across the board, no doubt, every NJGCA member will see some kind of benefit from the proposed versions of tax reform, but unfortunately I CAN’T. If we all lived in South Carolina or Florida (and we all may someday…) then I believe I would definitely be able to tell you “YES, these bills are good.” But because we are all here in high-cost, high-tax New Jersey, I just can’t say for sure. The answer of whether this will be good, bad, or basically a wash depends entirely on your financial situation, on how the business is structured, and what deductions your currently take, which may be reduced or eliminated altogether. Are you a joint or single filer? Do you have kids, if so are they adults yet? Do you own your home, how much is your mortgage? Do you pay closer to $7k a year in property tax or $25k? Are you an s-corp or a c-corp, and would you be willing to change? What do you currently pay in state income tax, do you have a second home, and on and on and on. Your answer to any of those questions will matter a lot.

We are all going to be leaning very heavily on our accountants in the coming months to truly understand the impacts of the various tax reform proposals. We will try to keep our document updated as the various proposals make their way through Congress.  The current outline refers mainly to the bill passed by the House of Representatives last week. It passed 227-205 mostly on party lines. The New Jersey delegation voted 11-1 against the bill. There are some important differences between the House bill and the Senate bill, and most of those differences are noted in our breakdown. The Senate is expected to vote on their bill next week, and if it passes then work will begin on a final compromise. Once that bill is settled on, both houses of Congress will need to vote again in order to send it to the President, who has already committed to signing it.

At this point I am just fearful that they are so desperate to accomplish something, anything, and want very badly to say they accomplished tax reform, regardless of whether it is good or not. The political climate in Washington DC is even more toxic than it has ever been even with only one party controlling all three branches. It is very sad and requires us to be more vigilant than ever before.

I’d also like to send everyone Happy Thanksgiving blessings.  Regardless of how fearful I am about the political climate and hurdles we will be facing in the New Year, I always take this time to reflect on how lucky I am to have my family, my health, a home to live in and food to put on the table.  We don’t often have to look very far to find someone whose struggles are far greater than our own.  I hope you are all able to take an opportunity to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor during this holiday season.  Let’s all thank God for the blessings that we have.

Finally, please see the following exclusive specials for NJGCA members from Autopart International which will run through the end of the year.

Thanks for reading -- See you next week!

NEWS AROUND THE STATE: THE NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW

11/22/2017:
Black Market for Cigarettes Flourishes under New York’s High Tobacco Taxes
High tobacco taxes in NY have fueled its black market for cigarettes, according to a new national survey by the Tax Foundation.  The survey estimated that 56.8% of all cigarettes smoked in the state came from illegal sources. NY has the highest rate of smuggling among all the states, and the survey pointed to the fact that it also has the highest state cigarette tax ($4.35 per pack, with NYC tacking on an extra $1.50) in the country.  Contraband cigarettes in NY have jumped close to 60% since 2006, during which the cigarette tax rate skyrocketed 190%.  The flourishing back market for cigarettes has hurt independent and chain retailers across the state, said James Calvin, director of the NY State Association of Convenience Stores. He pointed to the lack of planning to deal with illegal trafficking when lawmakers began raising tobacco taxes as paving the way to today’s contraband problem. “What's going on now is costing legitimate licensed retailers and wholesalers billions of dollars in sales,” he said. “That money could have been used to reinvest in NY businesses and increase employment in NY.” NY officials countered that they have safeguards in place, such as revoking state-issued licenses for alcohol or lottery tickets of retailers who sell contraband tobacco to deter smuggling. But Calvin said that it’s too little, too late, adding that the “cigarette strike force” launched in 2014 didn’t make significant inroads on stopping tobacco smuggling.

11/16/2017:
Tesla Semi: 500-mile range, lower running costs than diesel... and it's fast
The long-awaited Tesla Semi electric truck was unveiled Thursday night and it promises to shake up the shipping industry by significantly reducing the cost of transporting goods from point-to-point. Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled the Semi at a private event in California, where he touted a 500-mile range when loaded to 80,000-pound maximum weight allowed under federal highway regulations for Class 8 trucks. Musk said that the Semi's battery can be topped off to a 400-mile range in 30 minutes. That 500 mile figure is about half the range of a typical diesel truck, but Musk shrugged off the deficit by pointing out that the Tesla Semi accelerates faster and will be less costly to operate. Musk said that diesel trucks cost as much as 20 percent more than what Tesla projects for its electric Semi. A large battery is integrated into the Semi's chassis. The truck has four motors, one for each of its rear wheels. Despite its visual heft, the cab is a day cab, meaning it doesn't have a bed.

11/13/2017:
U.S. to Dominate Oil Markets after Biggest Boom in World History
The US will be a dominant force in global oil and gas markets for many years to come as the shale boom becomes the biggest supply surge in history, the International Energy Agency predicted. By 2025, the growth in American oil production will equal that achieved by Saudi Arabia at the height of its expansion, and increases in natural gas will surpass those of the former Soviet Union, the agency said in its annual World Energy Outlook. The boom will turn the US, still among the biggest oil importers, into a net exporter of fossil fuels. “The US will be the undisputed leader of global oil and gas markets for decades to come,” IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol said. “There’s big growth coming from shale oil, and as such there’ll be a big difference between the US and other producers.” The agency raised estimates for the amount of shale oil that can be technically recovered by about 30 percent to 105 billion barrels. Forecasts for shale-oil output in 2025 were bolstered by 34 percent to 9 million barrels a day. The US industry “has emerged from its trial-by-fire as a leaner and hungrier version of its former self, remarkably resilient and reacting to any sign of higher prices caused by OPEC’s return to active market management,” the IEA said. While oil prices have recovered to a two-year high above $60 a barrel, they’re still about half the level traded earlier this decade, as the global market struggles to absorb the scale of the U.S. bonanza. It’s taken OPEC and Russia almost 11 months of production cuts to clear up some of the oversupply.

MEMBER BENEFIT PARTNER MESSAGE BOARD:

TMP Energy Solutions

Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bills

We have had a number of NJGCA members successfully reduce their rate per kWh signing up through our energy saving program. We know it's difficult to collect 12 months worth of previous electric bills to get an "accurate" analysis when comparing a variable rate to a fixed rate, but we now have another option available.

This new solution is a power purchase option; the other program is still in full force and has saved members thousands of dollars. If you sign up for the power purchase option, you will be grouped with other NJGCA members until the minimum kW demand is acquired. By pooling the member's usage together, you will be able to take advantage, as large energy users do, and receive a lower kWh rate.

Each member will receive their own contract. Each member is responsible to sign and return the agreement the day it is received in order to secure the price for their group.

Please do your due diligence, so when you receive the proposal and the agreement you will be able to make an intelligent decision.

If by chance, you still want us to assess you bills, to give you a price to compare, we will require 12 months of your most recent utility bills.

There are no bills required, but we would still like to have one bill per meter on file to check account #'s, meter #'s  service addresses and other pertinent information incase there is a problem.

The term of the agreement is for 12 months. During this term period, you will have price protection against any energy price increases along with a low fixed kWh rate.

If you are interested in becoming part of this power purchase option, please contact Greg Cannon at the NJGCA.

Remember when you sign up your energy through the NJGCA Energy Program, TMP makes a considerable donation to the NJGCA Scholarship Fund through their proceeds. This has no affect on your rate, and costs you nothing out of pocket.

We hope to help hundreds of NJGCA members reduce their utility costs by participating in this and our other cost reduction programs.  Our purpose, in the endeavor, is to help NJGCA members lower their energy costs while supporting the NJGCA Scholarship Fund.

Contact GREG CANNON at 732-256-9646 or email Greg at greg@njgca.org. Mention that you are interested in saving money on your energy bills. NJGCA & TMP Energy Solutions will handle all the rest.

POLITICAL PARTICIPATON: THE NJGCA PAC

DEFENDING OUR MEMBERS.
PROTECTING YOUR INTERESTS.
ANSWER THE CALL & CONTRIBUTE TODAY!!

Promoting our agenda in Trenton is of utmost importance to NJGCA and our members.

However, in order to truly affect the debate, we must ensure our friends in the Legislature are re-elected. It is for this reason that your Association has established the NJGCA PAC.

For too long, the weight of funding our Political Action Committee, the arm of the Association responsible for political donations, has rested upon a few. This is not only unfair to those few members who have shouldered this burden, but means we are not utilizing our full strength to affect the debate in Trenton.

To truly understand the importance of supporting our allies, consider our successes in Trenton:

We defeated BELOW COST SELLING
We made history in getting FIRST RIGHT OF REFUSAL signed into law!
We have built large support for RIGHT TO REPAIR and got it passed out of the Assembly
We defended your small business against the false accusations of Attorney General Anne Milgram
We gained wide support to move New Jersey to an all PIF Inspection System and close the CIF lanes
...and MUCH MORE!!

In each instance, we achieved these goals with the help of our friends in the Legislature!

If every member contributes just $100.00 we will be able to provide the help necessary to ensure victory for our allies.

PLEASE SEND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO:
NJGCA PAC
4900 Route 33 West, Suite 100
Wall Township, NJ 07753
Please make your donation payable to NJGCA PAC

I understand that times are tough for all NJGCA members, but this is just as important as any battle we have fought in the past.

We have made great progress in Trenton. I hope that you will answer the call.

*NEW* Energy Information Agency Weekly Retail Gasoline Prices
