Compliance Calendars Available Now

The 2024 New Jersey Fuel Dispensing Facilities Compliance Calendar is now available for members to download and use.

You can find the file hosted on our website by CLICKING HERE.

The DEP's compliance calendar is an essential tool, and we encourage our members to use it daily. It is full of useful reminders, procedures, and related details.  You should print out a copy, record the required information, and keep it close on hand.  Using the calendar isn't only a good habit to have, it will also save you from possible headaches and costly penalties if DEP comes to your station inquiring after your environmental compliance.

Please call or email Nick@njgca.org if you have any questions.

Shop Security--Lock em up!

Over the last few years, and as employment and pricing conditions fluctuate in the market, we have witnessed a renewed focus on shop security. There has been an obvious and notorious increase in catalytic converter thefts, but we’ve also seen customer vehicles brazenly stolen from shop parking lots during daytime business hours and shops burglarized overnight.

We’ve touched on this in previous Road Warriors and our On The Road publications, yet the New Year has unexpectedly prompted us to bring this to the forefront once again.

We recently heard from a shop whose location was broken into over the holiday. The owner closes his shop between Christmas and New Year. Though his facility has multiple alarms, security cameras, and a gated/fenced perimeter, it did not discourage thieves from breaking into his lot and riffling through parked customers’ vehicles. While it may seem obvious to shop owners who do not have cameras or the benefit of an enclosed parking lot, our member typically leaves customers’ vehicles unlocked. Though all vehicle keys are in a cabinet at day's end, the fact that the location has high fencing, electronic gates, and multiple cameras had given the owner a false sense of security.  Unfortunately for him (and his customers), masked thieves were motivated enough to climb over the fence in the middle of the night and help themselves to the valuables inside the unlocked vehicles. In all, about 15 vehicles were "burglarized", and though the thieves didn't damage the vehicles themselves, the police were called to dust for prints, look for shoe prints, and take statements from owners on what may have been stolen. Not only did it "look bad" for the shop owner, but police involvement also meant that the customers waiting for those vehicle repairs had to wait even longer while their cars were being processed by law enforcement.

The start of the New Year is a time for resolutions, reflection, and fresh beginnings. If you haven't done so already, please take a few minutes to consider your own security apparatus and vehicle procedures--and regardless of how your lot is configured, keep customers' vehicles locked overnight!

Your Help Needed to Lower Debit Card Fees

Our allies at the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS) are asking all business owners to help weigh in to support a pending regulation that would lower the cap on debit card transaction fees. Debit card transaction fees are currently capped by the Federal Reserve at 21¢ per transaction; this proposal will lower it to 14.4¢ (which is still much higher than the cost of the transaction to the banks). Nevertheless, the Big Banks are working hard to kill this regulation entirely, and they have good relations with the Federal Reserve (to say the least). In order to ensure the Fed adopts the rule we need business owners to weigh in. It's a little more complicated than our usual system, but you can find everything you need, including a pre-drafted letter, HERE

Potentially Bad Weather Incoming

In case you missed it, this weekend there is a likelihood of a storm passing through the state, potentially the first meaningful snowfall in quite some time, though where exactly is even more uncertain than normal. The northern part of the state (above Route 78) is highly likely to get some amount of snow, south jersey will get rain, and it's unclear what will happen in Central Jersey. Either way, the Governor is likely to declare a state of emergency, probably for the whole state, which will mean the gouging law will go into effect automatically, preventing you from raising prices more than 10% (unless wholesale prices have increased more).
