Bayway Has Huge Impact

Last week saw the release of a new report that goes into detail about the huge positive impact of the Bayway Industrial Complex in Linden, and specifically the Phillips 66 Refinery at the heart of it. Given the criticism of fossil fuels over the last few years, it’s important for policymakers to have a real understanding of the concrete benefits our society sees from the presence of these reliable sources of energy. 

Some lawmakers have been pushing a “climate superfund” law that would fine large fossil fuel companies to the collective tune of $50 billion just for selling the fuels that our society needed and wanted. No doubt if it became law all those costs would just be passed down the supply chain.

The Phillips 66 refinery processes up to 258,000 barrels of crude oil per day, and has been running since 1909. Bayway is the largest refinery on the US East Coast, processing primarily light low-sulfur crude from Canada, North Dakota, West Africa, and northern Europe. It transforms that crude into about 2.22 billion gallons of gasoline per year, 1.76 billion gallons of distillate (diesel and heating oil), as well as aviation fuel and petrochemical feedstocks. 

There are other businesses at the complex. The Sunoco terminal stores 5 million barrels worth of fuel across 37 tanks (a barrel has 42 gallons). Infineum is a joint venture between ExxonMobil and Shell producing fuel additives and lubricants. The Linden Cogeneration power plant produces about 6% of the state’s electricity production from natural gas. 

The study went into depth on researching not only the direct economic impact, but also the downstream impacts from the Complex, and calculated that the site contributes over $7 billion to New Jersey’s GDP, about 1% of the entire state economy. It’s also responsible for half a billion dollars in total state and local tax revenue. With so much other infrastructure having closed over the last few decades in the Northeast, Bayway remains more essential than ever for the state and the region.

Lukoil Update

The struggles Lukoil dealers have been facing from the threatened sanctions are causing more and more problems, and getting more attention. 

The confusion around the situation has led to some dealers unable to process American Express and Wex cards, though allegedly the Amex problem should be fixed. Some dealers have tried getting their own credit card processing to fix the problem, which has led to Lukoil threatening them for ‘violating their franchise agreement’, even though it’s Lukoil as the franchisor which has failed the dealers.

There were also some rumors of a sale on Russian news sites, though we have confirmation those are false, and the company has not been sold at this time. 

We’re also keeping an eye on the new developments with the ceasefire proposal being pushed by the Trump Administration. There is a possibility that if it, or a version of it, is agreed to by Russia and Ukraine, then these sanctions could be removed entirely and all Lukoils will go back as they were two months ago. There’s also the chance that the Russian government may accept a plan that is not acceptable to Ukraine, and President Trump could remove the sanctions on Lukoil even without a peace deal. On the other hand, there is also a rising chance that Ukraine will accept a modified peace deal and Russia will not, and President Trump could move even more harshly against the Russians in retaliation.
