Successful Young Professionals Event
More Notices of Violation

I want to thank Eric and Michelle for putting together last week's Road Warrior without me, as I was away on a Caribbean cruise without access to cell phones and emails. As I'm sure you have all experienced when you get back from a vacation, there are hundreds of communications I have to respond to. If you contacted me while I was away please be patient.

This week's message is short because thankfully, all the lawmakers in Trenton are away on vacation, so nothing stupid can happen in that city!

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS
Last week, the Young Professionals group had a very successful networking event at the Biergarten in Asbury Park. These opportunities to get together allow young professionals to establish connections through laid back and casual networking, which helps to spark ideas, questions, and knowledge needed to be successful in the workplace. If you are a young professional, or know of a young professional (under 40) that may be interested in joining us for future events, email Michelle to join our mailing list at michelle@njgca.org. The group discussed that the next outing would incorporate both a fun, educational opportunity, as well as social and networking. We will announce more details shortly.

NOVs
We are still receiving warnings from our environmental MBPs and our legal experts that there has been an influx in notices of violations and agency presence on stations. For weeks we have been sending you alerts about this and advice on what to do. By now you should have received the July issue of the On The Road newsletter, and there are several articles in there of interest related to this issue. Pay special attention to Alicyn Craig's article on what to do if NJDEP shows up at your business on page 17 and Daniela Pava's article on page 24 on ways to avoid some of these penalties to begin with.

That's all for this week -
Sal Risalvato
Executive Director

MVC Just Quietly Brought Back a Fee to Renew Your License and Registration Online
It's back and drivers aren't happy. Drivers are once again being charged a pesky "convenience fee" for online Motor Vehicle Commission transactions that was banished by Gov. Chris Christie in 2016. Now called a service fee, the charge started showing up again this spring, just before the agency announced it was encouraging drivers to do as much business as possible online to keep agencies clear for those expected to get a Real ID driver's license.

When Big Tobacco Invoked Eric Garner to Fight a Menthol Cigarette Ban
The effort to stop the menthol ban was centered on a longstanding but increasingly prominent and effective strategy for waging political warfare in New York: Deploy the concerns of black residents as a weapon to sway the Democrat-heavy Council toward a stance favored by corporate clients.

Why A $15 Minimum Wage Makes Minimum Sense
The House will soon vote on the Raise the Wage Act to implement a federal $15 minimum wage by 2024, and all but three Democratic presidential candidates support it. None of them care who gets hurt. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office considered just that in a report out this week, outlining winners and losers of a hike from $7.25 to $15. Naturally, it shows at least 17 million Americans getting a raise - but also 3.7 million losing their jobs. The net effect: cutting total incomes by $9 billion.
