POWER OUTAGE AT NJGCA: EMAIL AND CELL PHONE ACCESSIBLE
NJGCA MEMBER CENSUS SURVEY: YOUR COOPERATION NEEDED

POWER OUTAGE
It continues to be quiet in Trenton because of summer break, which is good news. However, the storms that hit New Jersey on Monday night created chaos in central New Jersey, which of course affects us here at NJGCA. Our HQ has been closed since the storm hit Monday night. The only access we have to communicate with members is through the staff using their cell phones and email. This is how we know many of you have been trying to call the office, and have received a message that indicates our phones have been disconnected.

CENSUS SURVEY
This is a good opportunity for me to ask for your cooperation as it is important for us to complete an accurate census of our members. It has been a while since we have undertaken a project like this, and without your cooperation, it will be more difficult. One of the pieces of information that I would like to make sure is accurate is at least one cell phone number for you and/or a spouse. A lesson learned in the aftermath of this outage is that I could send a text message to each of you that would at least alert you of our situation. While we do have many cell phones on file, there are many that we do not have, and still others that are no longer accurate. Similar to the survey we sent to you several months ago, the staff will be creating the census survey in the upcoming weeks and again, I ask for your cooperation in helping us obtain accurate information about our members. For now, since we do have access to sending to our blast email service, we will get important messages to you if needed.

That's all for this week -
Sal Risalvato
Executive Director

  News Around The State

Murphy Signs Law That Targets Global Warming, Concedes It's Not Enough
Gov. Phil Murphy yesterday signed a bill that aims to ensure the state achieves aggressive targets to curb global-warming emissions while acknowledging the measure does not go far enough in addressing some of the most potent greenhouse-gas emissions. The legislation (S-3207) focuses on an earlier law that requires the state to reduce carbon pollution in New Jersey by 80 percent below 2006 levels by 2050, a target some climate activists view as unlikely to be met.

Pallone Among Several Lawmakers Trying To Cut Surprise Medical Bills
Just over a year after New Jersey adopted what advocates called the country's strongest measure to guard patients against the impact of so-called surprise medical bills, a Garden State congressman wants to apply some of the same reforms nationally. U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone (D-6th) at a public event Monday outlined his bipartisan proposal, which - as well as boosting protections for tens of millions of other Americans - could fill gaps in New Jersey's own new law. The measure, the "No Surprises Act," is co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR) and was approved last week by the powerful congressional committee Pallone chairs.

Tobacco 21 Laws in New York, Ohio to Take Effect
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week signed a law to raise the state's minimum tobacco purchase age from 18 to 21, reports U.S. News, while Ohio Governor Mike DeWine also signed off on his state's tobacco 21 legislation, WBNS reports. In New York, the change will take effect in 120 days and applies to traditional tobacco products, e-cigarettes and vaping devices. Ohio's law will take effect in 90 days and covers cigarettes, cigars, vaping pens and other tobacco products.

Amazon's Most Ambitious Research Project Is a Convenience Store
Almost four years later there are 14 Amazon Go stores in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Seattle. They're about a quarter the size of the original mock-up, located in downtown office districts and offering a small selection of sandwiches, meal kits, and convenience store items such as sodas, jams, and potato chips. Just as Bezos had hoped, there are no cash registers. Once customers have scanned a screen from a special app on their phone at the entrance, they just grab their items and walk out the door, while Amazon magically charges their credit card. By all accounts, the company intends to open more of these stores in the months and years ahead.
