EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE: GREETINGS & SAL-UTATIONS!

HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT FOR ALL MEMBERS REGARDING $15/HR MINIMUM WAGE PROPOSAL!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving. In the message I sent last week I wrote about the $15 minimum wage threat. I was glad that many of you replied expressing your outrage at this proposal and its advocates. We have a series of meetings in the upcoming week with other likeminded trade associations to plot out a strategy to defeat or at least mitigate the downsides of this proposal.

I expect NJGCA will be front and center in this debate because of how reliant on minimum wage we are relative to other industries (and because our self-serve prohibition means stations can’t just automate or lay off big chunks of their staff).  Many of our repair shops have also expressed outrage as they too utilize minimum wage employees in certain areas.  We need to emphasize to legislators that there is a real cost to this plan and there simply isn’t the money to do this. It seems that the advocates of this change think the only people affected are huge corporations that have big swimming pools full of gold, and all they need to do is give a tiny bit back and all of society’s ills will be solved. They don’t think of a small business owner struggling to survive under current conditions being asked to just come up with….how much money?

That’s the big question I have for you, and it’s your homework assignment. I am asking each of you to spend a little bit of time to go over your books for calendar 2016 and 2017. I would like each of you to come up with an exact figure of how much more your payroll would have been in each of those years if minimum wage were $15 an hour ($22.50 an hour for overtime). If you can also figure out how much you will need to increase prices, on gasoline and repairs, and yes even coffee, it would be extremely helpful.

The Road Warrior this week is short, this is the only thing I want to discuss in order to EMPHASIZE how important this is and that you personally do it. Don’t sit back and rely on everyone else doing it since that’s how nothing gets done. You will not be identified unless you specifically say you want to be. We need to able to have specific examples to give legislators, because our opponents have specific examples of people whose life will benefit from a $15 wage. If the only examples on our side of the fight are how Walmart will be hurt, then we might as well prepare for a $25 minimum wage!

Thanks for reading -- See you next week!

NEWS AROUND THE STATE: THE NEWS YOU SHOULD KNOW

11/26/17:

Before Wawa, there was Heritage's Dairy Stores in South Jersey
The store opened on Oct. 10, 1957, in an old hoagie shop in Westville, Gloucester County. It was the first convenience store in New Jersey and the foundation of a family legacy that spans four generations in the convenience-store business. Wawa and 7-Eleven brought their chains to New Jersey years later. “They seem to run a good operation, an honest operation,” said Sal Risalvato, executive director of the New Jersey Gasoline-Convenience-Automotive Association. “They should be very proud.”

11/24/17:

In Washington state, stickers at the pumps soon will announce how much you pay in gas taxes.

As Washington drivers fill their gas tanks for cross-state trips this season, thousands will see new stickers announcing the tax is 67.8 cents a gallon. Stickers have just started to appear around Seattle, according to Rep. Cary Condotta, R-Wenatchee, whose budget amendment to notify gasoline customers passed unanimously, at taxpayer cost of just $4,000. “I’m certainly getting a lot of feedback about it, all positive,” Condotta said Monday. He said it’s useful to inform people how their spending is split between fuel and tax. “It could make it more difficult to raise taxes,” he guessed.

11/24/17:

For drivers without garages, charging a big barrier to electric cars

The San Francisco metro area, at the intersection of environmental concern and technological prowess, has more electric vehicles than most cities worldwide. But for many residents, buying one remains unrealistic. Even as prices for EVs fall and the cars’ ranges increase, the hassle of plugging them in remains daunting for those who have only street parking. It is a problem that San Francisco and other cities will have to solve as governments around the world look to cut greenhouse gas emissions. A 2013 paper by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University estimated that just 56 percent of vehicles in the U.S. have a dedicated parking spot off the street.

11/29/17:

Revenue From Philly Soda Tax Falls

In October, Philadelphia received the least amount of revenue from its tax on sugar-sweetened drinks since its inception in January, Politico reports. City officials revealed that October’s revenue from the 1.5 cent-per-ounce tax hit $6.1 million, a sharp decline from September’s high of $7.4 million.

TMP Energy Solutions

Another Way to Save on Your Energy Bills

We have had a number of NJGCA members successfully reduce their rate per kWh signing up through our energy saving program. We know it's difficult to collect 12 months worth of previous electric bills to get an "accurate" analysis when comparing a variable rate to a fixed rate, but we now have another option available.

This new solution is a power purchase option; the other program is still in full force and has saved members thousands of dollars. If you sign up for the power purchase option, you will be grouped with other NJGCA members until the minimum kW demand is acquired. By pooling the member's usage together, you will be able to take advantage, as large energy users do, and receive a lower kWh rate.

Each member will receive their own contract. Each member is responsible to sign and return the agreement the day it is received in order to secure the price for their group.

Please do your due diligence, so when you receive the proposal and the agreement you will be able to make an intelligent decision.

If by chance, you still want us to assess you bills, to give you a price to compare, we will require 12 months of your most recent utility bills.

There are no bills required, but we would still like to have one bill per meter on file to check account #'s, meter #'s  service addresses and other pertinent information incase there is a problem.

The term of the agreement is for 12 months. During this term period, you will have price protection against any energy price increases along with a low fixed kWh rate.

If you are interested in becoming part of this power purchase option, please contact Greg Cannon at the NJGCA.

Remember when you sign up your energy through the NJGCA Energy Program, TMP makes a considerable donation to the NJGCA Scholarship Fund through their proceeds. This has no affect on your rate, and costs you nothing out of pocket.

We hope to help hundreds of NJGCA members reduce their utility costs by participating in this and our other cost reduction programs.  Our purpose, in the endeavor, is to help NJGCA members lower their energy costs while supporting the NJGCA Scholarship Fund.

Contact GREG CANNON at 732-256-9646 or email Greg at greg@njgca.org. Mention that you are interested in saving money on your energy bills. NJGCA & TMP Energy Solutions will handle all the rest.

POLITICAL PARTICIPATON: THE NJGCA PAC

DEFENDING OUR MEMBERS.
PROTECTING YOUR INTERESTS.
ANSWER THE CALL & CONTRIBUTE TODAY!!

Promoting our agenda in Trenton is of utmost importance to NJGCA and our members.

However, in order to truly affect the debate, we must ensure our friends in the Legislature are re-elected. It is for this reason that your Association has established the NJGCA PAC.

For too long, the weight of funding our Political Action Committee, the arm of the Association responsible for political donations, has rested upon a few. This is not only unfair to those few members who have shouldered this burden, but means we are not utilizing our full strength to affect the debate in Trenton.

To truly understand the importance of supporting our allies, consider our successes in Trenton:

We defeated BELOW COST SELLING
We made history in getting FIRST RIGHT OF REFUSAL signed into law!
We have built large support for RIGHT TO REPAIR and got it passed out of the Assembly
We defended your small business against the false accusations of Attorney General Anne Milgram
We gained wide support to move New Jersey to an all PIF Inspection System and close the CIF lanes
...and MUCH MORE!!

In each instance, we achieved these goals with the help of our friends in the Legislature!

If every member contributes just $100.00 we will be able to provide the help necessary to ensure victory for our allies.

PLEASE SEND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO:
NJGCA PAC
4900 Route 33 West, Suite 100
Wall Township, NJ 07753
Please make your donation payable to NJGCA PAC

I understand that times are tough for all NJGCA members, but this is just as important as any battle we have fought in the past.

We have made great progress in Trenton. I hope that you will answer the call.

*NEW* Energy Information Agency Weekly Retail Gasoline Prices

Each week, the Energy Information Administration publishes a list of average gasoline prices for the previous three weeks. NJGCA will begin including this list with the Weekly Road Warrior.  Remember, these prices are reflective of self-serve everywhere except NJ.
