GREETINGS AND SAL-UTATIONS!

Dear NJGCA Member:

HEALTHCARE REFORM BURDENS SMALL BUSINESSES, INCREASES COSTS

The Devil is in the Details.  That expression has been around for as long as I can remember, and the older I get, the more I realize how very true it is.

For well over two decades, the American public has been screaming for someone to do SOMETHING about the rising cost of healthcare.  Elected officials from Trenton and Washington, always aware that their next election is only around the corner, have showered the voting public with promise after promise to fix what’s wrong.

You’ve heard it all before.  Healthcare costs are high because: Doctor’s are greedy; pharmaceutical companies are over-charging for their drugs; hospitals bill you $40 for an Advil, let alone surgery; and insurance companies just like to take advantage of you to suck your wallet dry.

Pick your poison, and then play the blame-game – but politicians have failed to fix this problem.

However, we now have the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which Congress and President Obama have promised will not only fix our healthcare system, but drive down the cost of healthcare for everyone.  Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Well ladies and gentlemen, it is.  There’s no such thing as a free lunch, and the blunt truth is that the healthcare reforms enacted by Congress this year will only harm your small business.

How you ask?  Section 9006 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act creates what amounts to a paperwork mandate on your establishment.   Utilizing the 1099-MISC form that many small business owners are familiar with, the new law essentially forces you to fill out a form for every vendor you purchase goods from which totals over $600 a year!

Think about that – Every business transaction that totals over $600 a year.  That could be just about everything you use in your shop or store would have to be reported.

So, if you buy a truckload of gasoline, if you buy supplies from Staples for your office, if you bought tools from a tool manufacturer or if you buy snacks from a food distributor, you will be REQUIRED to fill out the appropriate form.

Why would Congress do this?  How does it help reform healthcare?  Well, it doesn’t.  This is a bureaucratic move that will help pay for healthcare costs, but not make it any less expensive for you to pay your insurance premiums.

But it isn’t only in paperwork that you have to worry.  Last week we forwarded you an article that says many small business owners will fall through the cracks and be negatively impacted by these reforms.  While some may benefit from tax credits, others will see their premiums rise and wipe out any savings.  Still others will not qualify for the under 50-employee threshold and be forced to pay more.  You can read this article from last week by clicking HERE

This new bill will cost you more money in manpower, expenses and eat into your bottom line.  In fact, federal regulations such as Section 9006 disproportionately affect smaller companies more than larger firms.

So when others are screaming for SOMEONE to do SOMETHING, just remember that sometimes doing SOMETHING can be worse than doing NOTHING at all.

Thanks for reading and see you next week!!

POLITICAL PARTICIPATON: THE NJGCA PAC

Ensuring our friends in the legislature are re-elected and advocating for our agenda in Trenton are of utmost importance to the agenda of NJGCA.

It is for this reason that your Association has established the NJGCA PAC.

For too long, the weight of funding our Political Action Committee, the arm of the Association responsible for political donations, has rested upon the shoulders of a few.  This is not fair to them, and it is not fair to many of you who are relying on the benefits of good legislation being passed in Trenton.

To truly understand the importance of fundraising for our allies, let’s look back upon the overwhelming successes of the last year:

NJGCA successfully lobbied against BELOW COST SELLING. If approved, BELOW COST SELLING would have cost each of you thousands of dollars and put many of you out of businesses.  NJGCA leaned on some of our friends in the Assembly and literally had the bill pulled off the floor on the day it was scheduled to be voted on.  Our friends in the Legislature helped us get this accomplished.

NJGCA made history and led the charge to pass the most comprehensive protection of franchisees in decades with FIRST RIGHT OF REFUSAL legislation.  FIRST RIGHT OF REFUSAL passed only because NJGCA and dealers throughout the state were able to lean on several friends in the Assembly and the Senate.

NJGCA has been rallying support for RIGHT TO REPAIR over the last two years among key legislators.  This would end the practice of car manufacturers denying you the codes necessary to complete the repairs you make on your customers cars.  Every state has tried to pass RIGHT TO REPAIR and no state has even been able to get the legislation out of committee.   Because of our friends in the Legislature, NJGCA has been successful in getting this bill passed by the Assembly and now awaits a vote in the Senate.

I am asking some of you as individuals to make a contribution and attend a fundraising event sponsored by one of our friends in the Assembly.

However, we will not be able to host events for all of our friends, so the NJGCA PAC will have to make contributions.  You will be receiving letters soon from the NJGCA PAC asking you to make contributions.

If every member contributes just $100.00 we will be able to provide the help necessary to ensure victory for our allies.

PLEASE SEND YOUR CONTRIBUTIONS TO:
NJGCA PAC
66 Morris Avenue
Springfield, NJ 07081
Please make your donation payable to NJGCA PAC

I understand that times are tough for all NJGCA members, but this is just as important as any battle we have fought in the past.

We have made great progress in Trenton.  I hope that you will answer the call.

NEWS AROUND THE STATE

8/4/2010:
Residents want cuts in spending over higher taxes
After a difficult budget cycle that has cut  many public services and reduced overall spending, a recent Fairleigh Dickinson University PublicMind survey illustrates that New Jersey residents prefer more cuts in spending to tax increases.

8/3/2010:
Lawmakers vow to support small businesses, repeal tax regulation
After failing to pass in the US House of Representatives, many members of Congress have vowed to continue to fight to repeal Section 9006 of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.  Though the measure will not go into affect until 2012, industry and economic leaders strongly believe it will burden small business owners and hamper growth.

8/2/2010:
Right to Repair falters in Massachusetts
The Massachusetts Right to Repair bill, which had  previously been passed in the State Senate, failed to win wide approval in the Massachusetts House of Representatives.  Supporters state that automakers and their lobbyists had used scare tactics to prevent the bill’s final passage.  Click the link above to read more.

7/30/2010:
Engineered microorganisms may reduce cost of bio-fuels
A California biotechnology company has recently developed gene that, when introduced in E.Coli bacteria, can produce hydrocarbons in a direct, simple conversation from sugar.  If sustainable, the discovery could help create bio-fuels more cheaply and efficiently than current methods.  Click above to learn more.
