PAY EQUITY BILL SIGNED
SELF-SERVE UPDATE

PAY EQUITY
There's not much to report this week, as the Governor is currently out of state vacationing in Italy. Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver becomes the acting governor while the governor is out of state. Late last week, she signed legislation that prohibits employers from asking prospective employees their previous salary history. This is another bill signed in an effort to achieve gender pay equity. This may or may not affect you but you should be aware this will become law in six months.

SELF-SERVE
This light news week is an opportunity for me to give you a quick update on the self-serve issue. Several of you have asked in recent weeks what is going on as I have not written much about it. This is because we have been steadily working on this issue and meeting with legislators. We do have a contingent of members who have been accompanying us to meetings with legislators on this issue. You know that I rely on my gut and my instincts for a lot of what I report to you, and in recent months, the feedback and the tone with which we received the feedback from legislators is markedly different than it has been in the past. Although we still have some key legislators that remain a roadblock for us, many legislators are now agreeing with us that it is long past the time for New Jersey to end its ban on self-serve gasoline. For those of you that would be interested in becoming a part of the group that accompanies us to these meetings with legislators, please contact Eric at eric@njgca.org or call 732-256-9646 and let him know to put you on the meeting invitation list.

That's all for this week -
Sal Risalvato
Executive Director

New Law Aims For Speedier Road Improvements In New Jersey
Many New Jersey motorists say they have yet to feel the benefits of recent gas-tax hikes that are bringing in more revenue than ever for road improvements, but a new state law could change that by making transportation projects run more expeditiously. Enacted by Gov. Phil Murphy last week, the legislation makes a number of administrative reforms that are designed to improve efficiency and speed up the time it takes the state to complete road work that's funded with gas-tax revenues.

Florida Turnpike to Get EV Charging Stations
This week, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis announced that the state would construct charging stations for electric vehicles at all Florida Turnpike service plazas by 2020, the News Service of Florida reports. Other major highways also will get charging stations.

New York Bans CBD Food Products
This month, the New York Department of Agriculture and Markets clarified its position on the inclusion of cannabidiol (CBD) in food products. The department's policy states that "No food or beverage product may be made or sold in New York State if it contains CBD as a food, a food additive or an ingredient."

Oliver Signs Bill That Aims To Close Gender Pay Gap
Building a stronger and fairer economy for everyone in New Jersey is what Gov. Phil Murphy and Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver ran on. But even after the governor signed a tough pay equity law last year, there was still more to do. Women in New Jersey still earn less than their male counterparts, in some cases by a lot. Overall, women in New Jersey earn 80 cents on the dollar. It's 74 cents for white women, 88 cents for Asian women, and 56 cents for black women and Native Americans. For Latinas, it's the worst in the country, at 42 cents on the dollar. Acting Gov. Sheila Oliver wielded the pen Thursday for a bill that hopes to close the gap for women and people of color, in general by prohibiting prospective employers from asking about salary history.

Ford, VW, BMW, Honda Reach Emissions Deal With California, Bucking Rollback
Ford, Volkswagen, BMW and Honda have reached a deal with California to increase gas mileage standards and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, setting a national standard, a longtime auto industry goal. The deal between the four automakers and the California Air Resources Board appears to offer a way around the thorny standoff between the Trump Administration and California over the administration's push to roll back the standards laid out during the Obama Administration. The fight, however, is expected to continue in the courts despite the deal as the administration continues its efforts to rewrite the rules. A White House spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Congress Introduces Bill Targeting Online E-Cigarette Sales to Minors
U.S. Representatives Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) and Kelly Armstrong (R-ND) introduced the Preventing Online Sale of E-Cigarettes to Children Act. The legislation is the companion bill to S. 1253 introduced by U.S. Senators Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), John Cornyn (R-Texas) and Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) this spring. The legislation seeks to prevent online sales of e-cigarettes to minors by applying the same measures already in place for cigarettes and smokeless tobacco products purchased online.
